A petition for a recount of the votes tallied for the conservation bond issue is being circulated in Johnson County.
The bond issue called for a $20 million tax on residents, so the county could go out and buy unspecified lands for undefined uses. The measure required a super majority — or 60 percent of voters — to pass. The measure narrowly passed with 60.8% of voters saying "yes" to higher taxes.
Vote count accuracy is 'must have' no matter the issue or party affiliation. So with the margin of passage at just 0.8% being so thin, and given Auditor Tom Slockett's poor performance history in recent years with vote counts, as well as the fact that optical scanners/electronic tally machines have a margin of error of 1%, the bond opposition group FLIPNO is petitioning for a recount.
