Great legend. Supposedly Muhlenburg removed his *taller* and robe before speaking these words to reveal the uniform of a general in the Continental Army.
Unfortunately, most historians believe it's only a legend. It should be noted, though, that his brother was the first Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, and his dad, Henry Melchior Muhlenberg, is often spoken of as the father of Lutheranism in the United States. Henry Melchior started the Pennsylvania Ministerium, North America's first Lutheran denomination.
