Deport Washington in November

Consumer confidence continues slide

The economic news continues to sour, as the Consumer Confidence Index report came in at 50.4 for July, a significant decline from the 54.3 figure for June.  The decline follows last month's nearly 10 point drop from the 62.7 reported for May.

With consumer spending accounting for approximately two-thirds of the U.S. economy, it takes a reading of 90 to indicate a healthy economy.

Iowa City Police Charge Davenport Man in Stabbing Incident

IOWA CITY, IA. -- On Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at 4:16am, Iowa City Police responded to a report of a stabbing at 132 N Dodge St. #5. As officers responded to the residence they intercepted a vehicle driving erratically and travelling the wrong way down a one way street near the location of the reported stabbing. The driver of the vehicle was identified as James Robert Cosmo Flansburg-Sivell, 20, of Davenport, IA. Further investigation found that Flansburg-Sivell had been involved in an altercation at 132 N Dodge ST #5 and had fled after stabbing the adult male victim in the leg.

During the investigation, the victim and Flansburg-Sivell told police that they are acquaintances of one another and are staying with a mutual friend at 132 N Dodge St #5. After an evening playing video games and consuming alcohol, Flansburg-Sivell and the victim got into an argument over who was going to sleep on the couch and get a pillow. The argument turned physical and the two men began punching each other. Flansburg-Sivell told police that in a "fit of rage" he stabbed the victim in the leg with a pocket knife. A witness pulled Flansburg-Sivell away from the victim after the stabbing. As witnesses attempted to get the victim into a car to take him to the hospital, Flansburg-Sivell followed and slashed one of the vehicle's tires. As the victim called police Flansburg-Sivell fled the scene and, within minutes, was captured by Iowa City Police.

The victim was treated for non-life threatening injuries to his leg. James Robert Cosmo Flansburg-Sivell was charged with Willful Injury, OWI, Possession of a Controlled Substance-Marijuana, and Criminal Mischief in the 5th Degree. He was taken to the Johnson County Jail.

A criminal charge is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

McKinley: Democrats Tripped Iowa’s ‘Race to the Top’ Chances

Governor Culver and legislative Democrats followed the wrong agenda and now our students will miss out

DES MOINES, IA. -- Senate Republican Leader Paul McKinley (R-Chariton) today issued the following statement after the Iowa Department of Education learned that Iowa was not picked as a finalist for the national “Race to the Top” education grant program:

“It should come as no surprise that Iowa was not selected as a finalist for the national “Race to the Top” grant program considering Governor Culver and legislative Democrats submitted an application that failed to meet the essential guidelines laid out by the Obama Administration. Senate Republicans attempted to improve Iowa’s chances by advancing key areas regarding pay for performance, student achievement and charter schools among others but Culver and his allies chose to listen to their union bosses and instead ignore the needs of our students.”

Dave Funk to Announce Bid for Supervisor

Iowa GOP Chairman Strawn, Lt. Gov. nominee Kim Reynolds Lending GOP Support

DES MOINES, IA. -- Dave Funk will hold a news conference Wednesday morning to announce his run for elected office in Polk County. Funk recently finished a competitive GOP primary for the 3rd Congressional District nomination. Funk is expected to be nominated tonight by a special Polk County Republican Convention to run in Polk County’s 3rd supervisor district against incumbent Democrat Tom Hockensmith. 

Funk will be joined by Iowa GOP Chairman Matt Strawn and GOP Lieutenant Governor Nominee Senator Kim Reynolds. They will discuss the importance of electing a Republican to the office of Polk County Supervisor.

Road Construction - Wetherby Drive and Terrapin Drive

Weather permitting, beginning on Wednesday, July 28, 2010 work on the Sycamore Street Improvement Project will require the closure of Wetherby Drive and Terrapin Drive at their intersections with Sycamore Street. It is anticipated that normal traffic will resume on Terrapin Drive and Wetherby Drive by the end of August, 2010.

Motorists are encouraged to take note of this construction work and to seek an alternate route during this time period. As always, caution should be exercised when traveling through all construction areas.

Iowa Sweet Corn Available at the Akdeniz Market

CORALVILLE, IA. -- Picked this morning, the 'Honey & Cream' variety of Iowa Sweet Corn is now available at the Akdeniz Market located at 421 Tenth Avenue in Coralville.

Daniel Thayer, son of proprietor Mike Thayer, is working this summer selling sweet corn and other fresh produce items such as watermelons, onions, potatoes, peppers, tomatoes and garlic available at the market.

The corn sells for $5 a bakers dozen while supplies last.

Brenna Findley makes good first impression

Making an appearance at the Johnson County Republican Central Committee Headquarters Tuesday night, candidate for Attorney General, Brenna Findley made a good first impression on about 35 area Republicans in attendance.

Billed as a Summer Evening Dessert Reception, Findley basically introduced herself to a crowd eager to get to know the candidates on the ballot and she didn't disappoint.

Providing her background of being raised and homeschooled on a farm near Dexter, Iowa, and then graduating with honors from Drake with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, Findley's story is grassroots All-American.  After Drake she went to law school, you can review her bio by clicking here.

Professional and quick with responses, Findley said Democrat Tom Miller has been A.G. since 1978 and it’s time for a change in the state.  Her website points to some rather eye-opening incidences our current A.G has been involved with (sweeping Gov. Culver messes under the rug) and her goal is to prevent such bad behavior from happening again.

Do you believe that the new health care bill is unconstitutional?

Yes?

So does Findley.  If elected in fact, that will be one of her first acts, to join the more than 20 states who are contesting ObamaCare on constitutional grounds.  

"As Attorney General, I will join the states contesting the new health care bill," she stated to loud applause.

Also in attendance was candidate for U.S. House Mariannette Miller-Meeks, who repeated her 'about me' speech and then discussed her recent polling data which seemed to excite the crowd, but didn't do anything for yours truly.  An invitation was extended to her today to come visit and discuss her campaign, we'll see if she cares to.
