Football fans traveling to home games of the nationally ranked University of Iowa Hawkeye football team should experience few game-day traffic delays triggered by road construction on their way to historic Kinnick Stadium this fall. There are just two routes into the UI campus that will be affected by continuing construction.
Motorists who routinely exit Interstate 80 at Hayden Fry Way (First Avenue) in Coralville should note that construction of a new bridge over Clear Creek just two blocks north of the intersection of U.S. Highway 6 and Hayden Fry Way -– the corner that includes the UI Softball Complex -– will likely result in some delay to traffic both before and after games throughout the season.
Drivers entering the Iowa City area should also note that construction on Interstate 80 near Exit 244 (Dubuque Street) has limited the width of eastbound and westbound lanes. The Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT) indicates that there is occasional nighttime work that reduces traffic to one lane in either direction. This project is expected to be completed in late October.
Additional information and greater detail on highway construction in eastern Iowa is available at http://www.511ia.org, IDOT’s official website.
Individuals who do not have season parking placards are reminded that the overwhelming majority of parking spaces available in University parking lots adjacent to or near historic Kinnick Stadium are reserved. They are urged to consult http://www.uifootballparking.com
for a comprehensive review of game-day parking options.
Football fans are also reminded that they can eliminate all the hassles of game-day parking by riding the Hawkeye Express to and from Kinnick Stadium. The Hawkeye Express is a train that will begin service to Kinnick three hours before Iowa’s 11 a.m. games, and four hours before the Hawkeyes’ 2:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. games this season. Post-game service begins at the start of the fourth quarter and continues for two hours after the end of each game.
Hawkeye Express riders board the train at the depot near the Comfort Suites on U.S. Highway 6 near Coral Ridge Mall. Round-trip tickets are $10 for adults, while children 12 and under ride for free. Free parking is available in lots near the Comfort Suites, IHOP restaurant and Coral Ridge Mall.
