IOWA CITY, IA. -- At approximately 1:15 PM, on Wednesday, February 1, 2012, the Iowa City Fire Department was called to a trailer full of hay bales on fire on Mormon Trek Boulevard near Rohret Road. Quint 2 responded from Station 2. Upon arrival they requested Engine 1 for assistance. Quint 2 personnel encountered a farm tractor pulling a trailer with several large hay bales, fully engulfed in fire. The occupant of the tractor was able to un-hook from the trailer on the street. Quint 2 and Engine 1 personnel, with the help of the farm tractor, proceeded to spread the bales out so they could be extingished. City crews with end loaders and dump trucks arrived on scene and assisted with spreading the hay out. Once the bales were extinguished they were hauled away by city crews. There were 6-8 hay bales on the trailer, they were a total loss, as was the trailer. Mormon Trek Boulevard between Rohret Road and Cae Drive was closed for 1 1/2 hours. There were no injuries, and traffic was re-routed safely by the Iowa City Police Department.
