The Iowa City Fire Department is proud to announce the establishment of a Child Passenger Safety Fit Station! The Fit Station will be located at Iowa City Fire Department Station #4, 2008 Dubuque Road, Iowa City.
With six firefighters recently completing the Child Passenger Safety Technician Certification program developed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the department now has a total of eight certified technicians. These additional technicians provide the department, a Co-Lead Agency for SAFE KIDS Johnson County, the opportunity to partner with child safety groups and individuals to launch a "Permanent Fit Station" for child passenger safety. The establishment of such a vital service has been a long-term desire for all child safety advocates in Johnson County.
Fit Station events will be scheduled on a regular basis throughout the year. Fire department personnel and SAFE KIDS Johnson County members will be available to inspect child safety seats, teach parents the correct and safe ways to install safety seats, and address general child safety questions or issues.
The first Fit Station event is scheduled for Tuesday, October 2nd, from 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM at Iowa City Fire Station #4.
Families are welcome to "drive in" anytime during event hours. Families needing to schedule a specific time to meet with a Child Passenger Safety Technician may make an "appointment" by calling Mercy-On-Call (319-358-2767).
