Rod Sullivan opposed the construction of a new jail back in 2000.
“Even in 2000, I recognized the overcrowding was a huge problem,” Sullivan said this week.
Rod Sullivan supports the construction of a new jail in 2012.
Rod Sullivan implied Sheriff Lonny Pulkrabek and County Attorney Janet Lyness were guilty of Jim Crow shenanigans back in January of this year.
"I just finished reading “The New Jim Crow” by Michelle Alexander. This book should be required reading in Johnson County. Why Johnson County? Because despite our “liberal” credentials, we incarcerate African Americans at the HIGHEST rate in Iowa!
Johnson County is about 85% white, and 6% African American. Yet we incarcerate African Americans at several times the rate of whites. Juvenile Court involvement occurs at a rate of NINE times the rate of whites. How can we possibly accept these disparities?"
Rod Sullivan supports a bigger jail that would do more of what he claims above, just 9 months later.
This guy is so full of hot air!
On over-crowding: If he recognized in 2000 that the jail had overcrowding problems, then why did he BLOW OFF addressing the issue until now? This problem has FESTERED for more than a dozen years, meanwhile, the board of supervisors, with Rod Sullivan as Chairman many of these years, have spent millions and millions of taxpayer dollars on other projects, like green space, a trail, a geo-thermal conservation building (we *NEED* it RIGHT NOW!), a four story building that only uses 3 floors of the space, distracting us with a bridge to nowhere and the list goes on. And there is NO JUSTIFICATION for having a platinum-plated justice center building when a silver-plated building would do just fine. This current batch of supes are irresponsible. I can give you three reasons to vote down the jail. The inept management of Sullivan, Rettig and Harney. Neuzil was the only voice of reason on this issue but he was voted down. Stutsman is also inept, but she won't be on the board in 2013. The nonsense that has taken place at the JECC will happen with a new jail with these people in charge. Can we not learn from history folks?
On Jim Crow charges: How can Sullivan excuse what he said back in January, given his stance in support of a bigger jail now? He can't.
Rod Sullivan, politician in the worst sense, hypocrite, intolerant, a man of double-standard, a flip-flopper.
He's up for re-election in November.
