Captain Larry Kahler retired Thursday, November 29, 2012, at 0700 hours after a 26 year career with the Iowa City Fire Department. Larry joined the department on May 19, 1986. He was promoted to Lieutenant on October 29, 1990, and served as Training Officer from 1994 to 1996. On December 28, 2000, he was promoted to Captain. During his career, he attained the following certifications: Fire Fighter III, HazMat Technician, Driver/Operator Pumper and Aerial, Instructor II, Public Educator I, Health & Safety Officer, Incident Scene Safety Officer, and Emergency Medical Technician - Basic. Captain Kahler coordinated the activities of four fire stations and 19 fire suppression personnel. He served as a member of the Johnson County Hazardous Materials Team and was past coordinator of the Johnson County SAFE KIDS Coalition. He was a member of the Fire Department Safety Officers Association and the National Fire Academy Alumni Association. Captain Kahler attended the National Fire Academy where he earned certification in Management Science. Larry served in the United States Army from 1971 to 1973, where he was assigned as a nuclear weapons specialist in Stuttgart, Germany.
