Whitaker to Senate Candidates: Pledge to Defund Obamacare

Candidate Asks Why Others Won’t Take Pledge

DES MOINES, IA. Matt Whitaker today is calling on all the candidates for the Republican nomination to join him in signing the pledge to defund Obamacare. Whitaker and Sam Clovis are the only two candidates to have signed the pledge put out by the Senate Conservatives Fund.

“This is the last opportunity to stop it,” said Whitaker. “Our elected officials have to stand tall. In addition, we need to know that candidates will have the backbone to say no if they are elected. We’ve had enough double talk from Washington. ”
Obamacare will begin to be implemented this October. Congress has passed a funding resolution through September 30th. Congress can fund the entire government, except for funding for mandatory and discretionary Obamacare spending.
“If candidates do not support defunding Obamacare, then they ought to tell Iowans why,” said Whitaker. “We have enough people in Washington who won’t stand up for our rights. Let’s not send another.”
The likely Democratic nominee Bruce Braley voted in favor of Obamacare and has voted to continue to fund it repeatedly. Whitaker believes that Republicans need to draw a clear distinction with Braley, including defunding Obamacare.
“We need a nominee who can go toe to toe with Bruce Braley on this issue,” said Whitaker.  “It should be a clear choice: he voted for it and we believe it should be defunded.”
