Metro area governments collect donations for Severson Holiday Charity Challenge

JOHNSON COUNTY -- For the third year in a row,  co-workers, colleagues, and friends of the late Linda Severson will pull together over the holidays to do what Linda always did -- collect donations to help people in need. Severson, who served as the Human Resources Planning Coordinator for the Metropolitan Planning Organization of Johnson County (MPOJC) from 1994 until her death in 2011, coordinated the City of Iowa City's holiday donation drive each year, so after her death, city and county government staff with whom she had worked organized the "Severson Holiday Charity Challenge," to help carry on her work.

The challenge allows each participating government entity to select the charity they wish to support.  The staff (including elected/appointed officials) that collects the greatest number of donated items per full-time employee between December 1 and January 3 will be awarded the "Severson Cup," an engraved traveling trophy.

The governmental entities that will participate this year, and the charitable organizations for which they'll be collecting donations, are as follows:

Iowa City: Joan Buxton Schoolchildren's Aid Fund
Coralville: Coralville Ecumenical Food Pantry
North Liberty: North Liberty Community Pantry
University Heights: Ronald McDonald House of Iowa City
Johnson County: Cassie's Mittens and Crisis Center
