County eyes land purchases with conservation bond money | Iowa City Press Citizen

CORALVILLE COURIER EDITOR'S NOTE: Should this money have gone towards a new jail instead?

Johnson County has spent just a small fraction of the $20 million voters set aside in 2008 for land preservation projects, but conservation leaders may open their checkbook this year for acquisitions.

The Johnson County Conservation Board is eyeing the purchase of a pair of potential wildlife areas and several pieces of land to extend its trail network, county conservation director Larry Gullett said Wednesday.

“Right now we’re working on $2.5 million in land acquisitions that are highly likely to happen,” said Gullett, though he was unable to provide details about the properties because no deals have been finalized.
